Still Level in Every Way

We often hear people say, “The ground is level at the cross.” It’s not talking about the condition of the Terrafirma! It means that anyone, no matter his creed, color, or station in life, is welcome to receive salvation through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Nothing matters at the cross, except the heart. Romans 10:13 tells us that “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

But the opposite is true as well. We read in the Gospels of the various responses to Jesus’ crucifixion. The chief priests joined the scribes and elders and mocked him. The thief on the cross also taunted Jesus. Matthew 27: 39,40 records yet another group: “and those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, ‘…If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.’”

The ground at the cross is level for mockers: Religious leaders, thieves, and ordinary people all rejected Jesus that day on the cross, and it is still true. It doesn’t matter who you are. Educated people mock Jesus and His followers every day. Criminals curse Christianity. Religious people reject His people as intolerant, while showing their own intolerance. And sadly, many ordinary people will not even make an acknowledgement of Jesus and His great sacrifice this Sunday.

I don’t know where you fit into this scenario. Are you a mocker, rejecter, or just an “I-don’t-care” sort? No matter your heart, the ground at the cross is still level. ALL are invited. Jesus gave proof to that when He said to the thief hanging on his own cross next to Him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:42). What?! How did such a man get this wonderful news? By simply believing Jesus was who He said He was! First, this man rebuked the other thief, and in doing so, he rebuked all the others as well. Then, he shows his true understanding when he says to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom” (Luke 23:42). He believed and in a very short time, he would join Jesus in heaven! Wow! As long as we have breath, we have time to trust in Jesus!

So, will you come? Will you set aside what makes sense to you, set aside your pride, set aside any beliefs that are contrary to what Jesus said, repent and believe? Will you be the “I-wish-I-knew-what-this-is-all-about” sort?

“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, (Acts 3:19). (If you need more information, click here. The link will take you to the Gospel tract that was instrumental in my salvation.)

And to you, dear brother or sister in Christ, He is risen indeed! Hallelujah! Will we ever be able to wrap our minds around such wonderful news? Take some extra time this special and holy week and read all the Gospels’ accounts of this grand and glorious day! Shout the good news! Dance a jig! (Well, maybe just in your living room! LOL!) Praise God for His unspeakable gift!
