Who am I? So many labels can be applied to any of our lives. I'm a born-again follower of Jesus Christ, a pastor's wife, an author, mother, grandmother, musician, and blogger, and podcaster. "Beyond Common Sense" is a place where I share "Lessons Learned While Walking with Jesus." I have found that not only is God everywhere, but He teaches us through our experiences and common, ordinary examples from His world. From the inchworm to the tragedy of my husband's fall, all of these hold timeless truths handed to us by our heavenly Father to draw us closer to Him. How wonderful! What a privilege to share some of those lessons... with you!
A “One Cell” God!
“A child is born”— Several times in the Old Testament, Jesus came to the earth as a man. (The theological term for these appearances is Christophanies.) So why as a baby this time? One commentator’s thoughts were that in this way He would be fully man—able to relate to us in every way. In my … More A “One Cell” God!
Constancy
“It’s strange to think that it’s the same sun that rose on the third day of creation,” I said as we watched the sun rise above the oceanic horizon. “It’s the same sun that Adam saw his very first day of existence and Moses and our parents and great-grandparents.” I was on a roll, while … More Constancy
The Meaning of Life—Death
Sitting in a funeral home with people you don’t know is not one of my favorite pastimes, but when you are married to a pastor it happens. It’s always a time of reflection, especially when there isn’t much of an emotional connection. The conversations swirl around you about the pictures flashing on a screen. “ … More The Meaning of Life—Death
Burdox and Thistles

Death—Life—Grief—Peace
Last year at this time, we were entering the darkest days of our time with Mom. Her sister passed on October 17th and that news seemed to crush what was left of her shattered mind. Oh, dementia! You are so cruel! I can’t head into these next few weeks without looking back over my shoulder … More Death—Life—Grief—Peace
Just a Little
They’re only 3-pound weights. What can they do? Am I only using that puny amount because I’m old and weak? Well, perhaps, but the real reason I switched from 5 pounds to 3 is because I now use them with my “Ab-Ripper” program. I’ve been using this program so long that I have it memorized, … More Just a Little
To Fan or To Stir—That is the Question!
2 Timothy 1:6 (ESV) For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 2 Timothy 1:6 (NKJV) Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. … More To Fan or To Stir—That is the Question!

I Will Not Yield!
Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 … More I Will Not Yield!
