This Sunday, I’ll be speaking at the Blooming Grove Historical Society‘s monthly meeting (2:00). It’s just a cluster of three buildings and a cemetery, but the information it holds is NOT a little thing! Sure, compared to the Smithsonian, it’s just a little place, but for me and the others whose roots began here, it’s an amazing local treasure.
All the artifacts in those buildings—the huge trunk that came over with them on the ship Margaret, the ship’s registry, pictures of their church in Mohringen, Germany—overwhelm me with the thought that each article represents a life and an incredible journey: a Journey of Faith.
“Journey of Faith,” my next book, is based on the information left behind by my ancestors. It has been a wonderful opportunity to dig into my genealogy as well as all the historical information surrounding their journey. Rootweb is a wonderful site with more information and charts than you can imagine!
And yet, even though these people are responsible for a large majority of the population in our area, what is that compared to 8.5 billion people who live in this world? It’s just a drop in the bucket!
Aren’t you glad we serve a God who knows each of us by name? In fact, He knows all the stars by name as well, and we can’t even count them all.
“My God is so BIG, so strong and so mighty, there’s nothing my God cannot do!!
Do you feel small and insignificant? Then you qualify for whatever it is that God wants to do in your life! Remember Saul? He hid on his coronation day, but later became so proud that he lost the kingdom to David, a man after God’s own heart. Zechariah 4:10 tells us not to “despise the day of small things.” David Guzik quotes Spurgeon on this verse:
“Spurgeon spoke to the need for courage in the day of small things in our churches: ‘To me, it seems that it should be your glory to join the poorest and weakest churches of your denomination, and wherever you go, to say, ‘This little cause is not as strong as I should like it to be; but, by the grace of God, I will make it more influential. At any rate, I will throw in my weight to strengthen the weak things of Zion, and certainly I will not despise the day of small things.’ Where would have been our flourishing churches of today if our forefathers had disdained to sustain them while they were yet in their infancy?”
I suppose this thought is special to me because my dear husband has always pastored small churches. Our work seems so insignificant, but then I remember the story of the little boy walking along the beach, throwing starfish back into the ocean. So many had washed up that his father said, “Son, you can’t save them all.”
The boy responded, “But I can save that one.” Yes!! So, keep brightening the corner where you are. Stay focused on the task God has for you to do, no matter how small, and make a difference!
