What a question the day before Thanksgiving! I remember a young man who couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving Day. He would talk about all the wonderful foods they would be eating on that special day for weeks before the blessed, thankful day!
It is a wonderful day with many wonderful traditions. The special meal reminds us of the bounty we enjoy in this country, even if we do suffer from ridiculous inflation at the checkout. Did that stop you from purchasing all the necessary foods for tomorrow? If not, just another reason to be thankful.
Is it wrong to look forward to a good meal? Of course not! Mmmm! I salivate just thinking about it! One of my favorite quotes is, “Hunger is the best sauce.” Do you get hungry for a certain food? Perhaps it’s something special or maybe just a family favorite that hasn’t been served for awhile.
A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb,
Proverbs 27:7 (NKJV)
But to a hungry soul every bitter thing [is] sweet.
Do you get hungry for a good meal of God’s Word? Sometimes, we read, and nothing seems palatable. Why? Here are several thoughts:
- The cares of this world crowd in, and time restraints make us look at the clock more than the words on the page.
- Life is good. Even if we don’t speak it, we can think we don’t really need that daily dose of God’s Word.
- We ride the coattails of past feasts on the Word.
- We nibble on scraps others send our way that may keep us alive but not spiritually healthy.
Tomorrow, like many of you, I’ll sit down to a well-prepared and rather time-consuming-prep-time meal, but it will be worth it. And when I push back from the table, filled (hopefully not too full!) and satisfied, it will be a wonderful feeling.
I can’t help comparing it to the feast God has prepared for us in His wonderful book, the Bible. He prepared it, we enjoy it. It lies there waiting for us to pick it up and dig in. But wait! Before you start feasting, there is one very special part of the meal and hopefully every physical meal you enjoy: prayer. I can’t tell you how many times that simple plead for a sweet, daily morsel turns my pickings into feasting. So, pray—pray for His special sauce: hunger!
Blessings to you and yours!
