All You Need is Love

Love—love—love! All you need is love. Well, that’s one thing the Beatles got right! What if all we had was love? Would that be enough? Isn’t that what this day is all about…love?

The Beatles are correct on this because of 1 John 4:8 God is Love! If we have God, we have love; and if we have God we have everything!

Galatians 5:22 -23 lists the fruit of the Spirit. Commentators say that the word fruit is singular because love IS the fruit from which all the other eight words spring. The fruit of the Spirit is love—a love of the Spirit (Guzik). When that is true—that we love God’s Spirit—we have joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. It is only through love that we experience God’s joy and peace. Only by living in God’s love can we be longsuffering and gentle and good. And it is only when we put on Christ (Romans 13:14) that we are able to have complete faith in our heavenly Father no matter what the test, the controlled strength of meekness, and the tempered life that shows forth God, God’s love, and the fruit of the Spirit to an unlovely world.

Oh, the power of God’s love!

So today, as we feel love in the air, remember the incomprehensible love of our God to His children. Some dear soul who fought one of the greatest battles: the battle of insanity, wrote these words on the asylum wall where he stayed. It was found after he was carried to his grave. Frederick Martin Lehman would later put them into his hymn, “The Love of God.”

Could we with ink the oceans fill
and were the skies of parchment made
and every stalk on earth quill and every man a scribe by trade,
to write the love of God above would drain the oceans dry,
nor could that scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.
