Notable Leaders

We live on the information highway—information is everywhere, even on the back of Sunday’s bulletin! Whether we are still living in a Christian America is certainly up for debate, but no matter the final conclusion no one can erase our Christian heritage—especially this one:

Four massive sixty-foot heads rise majestically in granite in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The faces of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt were carved on Mount Rushmore by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 workmen. About thirty men at a time hung from sling-like harness. es from the mountain’s top. They were equipped with dynamite, jackhammers, hammers and chisels. Started in 1927, the memorial took fourteen years to complete at the cost of $990,000. The men earned $8 a day. They blasted away eight-hundred-million pounds of rock. Amazingly, no one was killed during the process.

Those presidents were chosen because of the way they led our country and the decisions made that shaped the future of the United States. Jefferson once said he believed the teachings of Jesus provided “the most sublime and benevolent code of morals which has ever been offered to man.” Theodore Roosevelt stressed the Bible was essential to Christianity and good citizenship. Abraham Lincoln often mentioned God and principles from the Bible in his speeches and letters. George Washington stated, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.” As we remember the influence of great leaders from the past, let us strive to be great leaders to those around us, leading by example in biblical truths. We may never be memorialized in stone and impact over two million visitors each year. But we can strive to .. be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16a).

Enjoy this Independence Day by praying for our great country! God has a plan for her and it will come to pass!

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty
and continues [in it,]
and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work,
this one will be blessed in what he does.

James 1:12 (NKJV)
